Before measuring your vehicle's driveshaft, it is important to be safe

  • Whenever you are working under or around a vehicle, it is important to remember to chalk the tires of your vehicle, to prevent it from rolling unexpectedly, even if it is in park or your parking brake is on.
  • Remember that your vehicle's exhaust system and engine components may still be very hot and can cause serious burns, sometimes even an hour after driving the vehicle.
  • Wear appropriate safety gear such as safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris and gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and hot surfaces
  • It is recommended to disconnect your vehicle's battery if you have any loose or damaged wires
  • Ensure people around you know that you will be under the vehicle to prevent any accidents
  • Ensure the vehicle is off and not running
  • Ensure that the vehicle can not move by attempting to push it yourself
  • Ensure you have a first aid kit nearby in case of any minor injuries

4 Common Drivetrain Designs and How to Measure Them

Measurements should be provided to the nearest hundredth of an inch (i.e. 75.25").


Center to Center of the U-Joint

  1. From underneath your vehicle, place one end of your tape measure at the center of where your u-joint sits or rides
  2. Place the other end of your tape measure on the opposite side, where your u-joint sits or rides

Seal to Center of the U-Joint

  1. From underneath your vehicle, place one end of your tape measure where your transmission or transfer case seal (also known as a boot) meets your driveshaft slip yoke
  2. Place the other end of your tape measure at the center of where your u-joint sits or rides

Seal to Flange

  1. From underneath your vehicle, place one end of your tape measure where your transmission or transfer case seal (also known as a boot) meets your driveshaft slip yoke
  2. Place the other end of your tape measure against the flat surface of your flange, where your driveshaft meets and bolts to it

Flange to Flange

  1. From underneath your vehicle, place one end of your tape measure against the flat surface of your flange, where your driveshaft meets and bolts to it
  2. Place the other end of your tape measure on the opposite side, against the flat surface of your flange, where your driveshaft meets and bolts to it
