Driveshaft balance is critical for smooth operation, longevity, and overall drivetrain performance. An improperly balanced driveshaft can lead to vibration, premature wear, and even damage to other components.
The good news is that in most cases, you do not need to balance your driveshaft yourself—but there are some important exceptions.
Are Driveshafts Already Balanced?
Yes. All of our driveshafts are balanced during the manufacturing and remanufacturing process before they are shipped.
This means:
They are ready to install out of the box
No additional balancing is required for standard applications
Balance weights are already installed where needed
When You Do NOT Need to Balance a Driveshaft
You typically do not need to balance your driveshaft if:
You are installing a new or remanufactured driveshaft
Your vehicle is OEM (stock configuration)
The driveshaft has not been modified or damaged
In these cases, the driveshaft should operate smoothly when installed correctly.
When Balancing May Be Needed
You may need to have a driveshaft balanced if:
The driveshaft has been modified (cut, welded, lengthened, etc.)
You are experiencing persistent vibration after installation
The shaft has been damaged or bent
Balance weights are missing or knocked off
In these situations, professional balancing is recommended.
Signs of an Unbalanced Driveshaft
An unbalanced driveshaft may cause:
Vibration that increases with speed
Noise or humming from underneath the vehicle
Premature wear of U-joints or bearings
Damage to transmission, transfer case, or differential components
If you notice these symptoms, the driveshaft should be inspected.
Importance of Proper Installation
Even a properly balanced driveshaft can cause issues if it is not installed correctly.
Make sure to:
Install the driveshaft in the correct orientation
Torque all bolts to specification
Ensure proper driveline angles (especially on modified vehicles)
Improper installation can mimic the symptoms of an unbalanced driveshaft.
Professional Balancing
If balancing is required, it should be performed by a qualified driveshaft or drivetrain specialist using proper equipment. This ensures accurate correction and prevents further issues.
